Finding a Family Friendly & Flexible Employer

Family friendly work arrangements are practices or resources that make the workplace more flexible and help employees have improved work and family balance.

Good news! Finding a flexible job and extending parental leave has been made easier for parents with the introduction of new national labour laws. Effective January 2010, the Right to Request a flexible work arrangement and extend unpaid parental leave up to 24 months was introduced by the Federal Government  as part of the new National Employment Standards.  All Australian workers caring for children under school age or with a disability up to age 18 now have the right to request their employer for a flexible work arrangement.  Employers have an obligation to investigate the viability of the flexible work request and formally respond, in writing, to the employees’ request. Some examples of family friendly work arrangements include:

Access to flexible working hours that include negotiable start and finish times, days of work
Right to request flexible work arrangements such as part time and job sharing opportunities
Ability to purchase of additional annual leave
Ability to work school hours
Access to paid parental leave, subsidised child care or vacation care
